While not an exhaustive list, this glossary of website terms will help you navigate elements for basic web design on Squarespace & WordPress

Key terms you should know

Dashboard or Content Management System (Mission Control)

Your mission control—where you plot your course, edit content, customize layouts, and launch your site into orbit. This would be WordPress, Squarespace, or Shopify. I’m using Squarespace for this site.

Block / Module (Launchpad)

Building blocks—like text, image, video, or form modules—that you snap into place to shape each page. Most website builders have track and drop features.

Hero Section (Star Beacon)

Your site's prime real estate—a bold, attention-grabbing banner (often visual + headline + CTA) that orients visitors in your orbit.

Command Deck (Header)

Top-of-page area housing your logo, main navigation, and sometimes contact actions—think of it as your guiding star for visitors' journeys.

Galactic Map (Navigation / Menu)

The interstellar roadmap—site links guiding travelers (users) from one constellation (page) to another.

Footer Galaxy

The reflective lower orbit—where you dock links to legal info, contact details, and additional resources.

Domain Star (Domain Name)

Your unique celestial address in the digital sky—like somestartupincolorado.com, anchoring your presence in the universe.

Space Coordinates (Slug / URL)

The specific coordinates after your domain (e.g. /about or /services) that point to individual pages in your galaxy.

Orbit Shield (SSL Certificate)

Your site's protective force field—keeping data encrypted and earning trust with the little padlock icon.

Theme Nebula (Theme / Template)

Your brand’s cosmic aesthetic—guiding layout, colors, fonts, and look—and giving your site a cohesive identity.

Gravity Pull (Responsive Design)

The force that keeps everything aligned—making your site adapt beautifully across screens, from mobile meteor to desktop planet.

Rocket Fuel (Hosting)

The engine under the hood—your server home that keeps your site powered and accessible to visitors.

Cosmic Extension (Plugin / App)

Add-ons that supercharge your site—like SEO boosters, contact forms, or social feeds—propelling capabilities beyond the launchpad.

Beacon Signal (SEO)

Tactics that help search engines detect your presence in the digital galaxy—so your brand shines bright in search visibility.

Widget Comet (Widget)

Compact, interactive extras—like social feeds, sign-up forms, or feeds—that streak across your pages with purpose.

Site Scope (Page Template)

Reusable blueprint pages—keeping layout, branding, and structure consistent as you launch new content.

Space Beacon (Call to Action / CTA)

An invitation to take flight—buttons like “Book Now,” “Subscribe,” or “Learn More” that guide your users into action.

Meta-Gravity (SEO Metadata)

Behind-the-scenes data—like page titles, descriptions, and alt-text—that communicate with search engines and shape how your site appears in search results.

Favicon Star (Favicon)
